I've had both X and GR. Love them both, but they are completely different cameras. If I was forced to choose just one, it would be the GR every day, and twice on Sundays. I've had both as well and I'd pick the X once on Saturday and three times on Wednesday. Well with those dodgy aperture blades you'd need to pick it 3 times just to increase the chances of getting a valid shot ;-. It has its uses for recording information like flyers at the local bulletin board, but I never use it for actual photography.
I vastly prefer shooting with the GR. I think it has something to do with the XV seeming like it's pretending to be premium but not feeling that way in the hand to me. The GR does not pretend. Claiming an iPhone is not capable of "actual" photography is a pretty st.. In fact, you sound ignorant fazal.
Well, Foskito, it really depends on what you are trying to accomplish right? If you are used to an 8x10" camera, then it isn't going to cut it. However, Kathy Ryan and Michael Christopher Brown certainly made serious bodies of work that became books from iPhone 4 and iPhone 5 cameras.
That said, the GR is a lot more capable than an iPhone if you want to print large with a lot of detail. I have thousands of pictures of my everyday life captured with iPhones, and the IQ I can currently get from the 13Pro raw files is awesome, and "more than enough" much better than the old cameras I used to have.
For example, the first-gen of four-thirds or later m43cameras, even some APS too. The IQ from old small sensors like the Leica Digilux 2 has been surpassed by a long margin years ago. Am I going on my next travel adventure only with my phone? I think that is what I said. I believe the iPhone is a great camera for memories and some other applications. I have one as well. However, when making art, it really depends.
Most artists that use the iPhone print small. That's ok too. Anything that can make a photo can be used to make a great photo in the right context. I'm not sure why you think because I think the GR IQ is better it can do museum quality large prints , that somehow means the iPhone isn't capable.
I even listed two artists who made great books using 10 year old iPhones. John, I agree with you. I am referring to Mr. Fazal who claims he never uses a phone "for actual photography". That's why I consider his comment as BS. I have a few prints I did myself with my Epson, mostly 5x7 and a few 8X Most images live in the digital realm. My comments are a statement of fact. I did not say no one else uses the iPhone for photography, nor did I say that photos you take with your iPhone are somehow unworthy and not photography, so get off your high horse.
It's not specific to the iPhone, I can't stand the 1" sensor on my Sony RXM4 either and never use it, unlike the iPhone it has no other use so it sits in a cupboard. DNG files with plenty of micro contrast thanks to excellent optics and state of the art sensor performance versus wormy t-rans ones could be a reason to choose the Ricoh over a Fuji. The latter's sensor is getting really loooong in its tooth.
Concerning huge size and weight difference enough has been said. Regular people are fond of how great the images of their pocketable smartphone turn out. The GR gives that feeling to photographers who look at their images on a big 4K photoediting monitor that does make a smartphone image look like junk.
RAW helps a lot but has all the disadvantages that come with such a small sensor and something like ProRAW is still too heavily processed. You may not notice on a phone but you easily do on a monitor or print. Not to mention the difference in file manipulation in post.
If only we could appreciate the GR or any other camera for what it is without denigrating other cameras in the process. Much worse actually considering the really small m43 bodies have outdated sensor tech.
I have the GRii and really like it. Noise difference at ISO is interesting. About the same for warmer tones, but the GRIII has less in the cool tones but it looks smoothed over as if its getting "cooked" in raw. The "much worse" IQ comment is just the overused dramatic BS often spouted here. But, if you wanted to use other lenses, you would likely not be interested in comparing with the GR3x anyways. There are many significant handling differences - the GR3 is easily shot one handed, for example.
Plus, with the Lumix 20, you are not able to easily zone focus. And even with the Oly 17mm, that would still require two handed operation - e. Given the size and weight, I can even throw in my RXM7 in there, for the rare times I need the reach. LOL at the end you end up carrying more bulk than simply taking one small APS with a couple of lenses.
Can't think of an APS-C system that can have me covered from mm, with less bulk. Plus, I'd likely give up the ability to easily zone focus with most systems. But, I'd only have one body, and have to change lenses frequently and I have to deal with an on-screen distance scale.
Dude, unless you make a living through photography, relax. Get a GR 3x and nothing else and go with the flow. This level of stress, to have all the focal lengths with you at all times, can not be healthy.. No smartphone comes close, no ILC with kitzoom.
Slightly bigger, but the Sigma Merrill cameras had outstanding medium format-style quality in a small form, admittedly within a narrow shooting range. I sold them to get the Quattro range and wish I never had. The Quattro styling was avant garde but uncomfortable and bulky. It's a lot easier than getting dust cleaned out of a fixed lens compact camera.
