With the launch of Conductor, the work you do in Prep Builder running on your Tableau Desktop, can be saved to run in a centralized, scalable, and reliable server environment so your data is always up to date and easy to share. In prior releases, you would need to first download. Now those files are bundled with the connector, making it even easier to connect to your Salesforce data and work with your flows across Tableau platforms.
Note: If you have downloaded. Any old bookmarks will need to be reset. You may be interested in knowing what features were added to Prep Builder in previous months' releases. Below is information in summary form with links to Product Help. Tableau Prep Builder automatically saves your flow in the event of a crash, just like Tableau Desktop. The next time you open the application, a dialog is shown with a list of the recovered flows to select from.
You can open a recovered flow and continue where you left off, or delete the recovered flow file if you don't need it. This dialog will show every time you open Tableau Prep Builder if there are draft flows saved in your Recovered Flows folder. This feature is enabled by default, but can be turned off during or after install by an administrator. For more information, see Save a flow. Now when you connect to a data source and drag it onto the workspace, Tableau Prep Builder shows you where your next cleaning step can be added by showing an imaginary Clean step next to your Input step.
Simply click on the suggested Clean step and it's added in one click, helping you see the details of your data so you can start examining and cleaning your data right away. For more information, see Build and Organize your Flow. Use the new Group option when organizing your flow to select a set of connected steps and collapse them into a folder. With this new feature, large complex flows become easier to navigate, examine, and share with others. Instead of having to understand an entire flow, other users can focus on only the group of steps that pertain to them.
You can change the color of the group, add a description, copy and paste the group of steps to other areas of your flow, or save the grouped steps to a file or your server to reuse them in other flows.
Simply select the set of steps that you want to group and select Group from the menu. The selected steps are collapsed into a folder that you can name. You can add more steps to the group or remove steps from the group at any time, however, only steps that are directly connected to each other with a flow line can be included in the same group. Click the double arrow to expand or collapse the group at any time. Simply select Custom Fiscal Year from the More options menu for your field and set the custom fiscal year start month and the date part you want to convert your field values to in on easy step.
For more information, see Apply cleaning operations. In prior releases when you wanted to include a script step in your flow, you would need to configure your connections to R or TabPy in each script step for each flow that included them.
Now, you can set up your configurations for these analytics extensions once, from the top Help menu, just like Tableau Desktop and the configuration can be applied to any flow you work with. If you use both analytics extensions, you can use the same dialog to enter the connection information for each server. Note: You'll need to reconfigure your server connections for older flows that include Script steps using this new dialog. Now when you configure your input and output steps for incremental refresh, when you copy and paste the steps or save them for reuse later, the incremental refresh configuration information is preserved so that you can reuse these configurations without having to set them up again from scratch.
You can now output your full or incremental flow results to supported databases and create, replace, or append the table data with your clean, prepared flow data. Tableau Prep Builder supports saving flow data to the following databases:. In your output step, in the Save output to drop-down menu, select Database table.
Then, select the database and table where you want to save your flow output. You can also enter a table name to create a new table in the database. A field comparison preview shows the matching status between fields in your flow and fields in your table. A status field shows details about mismatched fields.
You can also add SQL scripts that can run before or after the data is loaded to the database table. You can use these scripts to create a copy of your table data before running the flow, add an index, add database constraints to the database table, and so on. Tableau Prep Builder release versions are numbered like Tableau Desktop maintenance versions, for example Release versions often include a range of new features and updates.
If you try and publish your updated workbook to a prior version of Tableau Server, where those features aren't available, the workbook becomes incompatible. There are no compatibility issues with maintenance or dot release versions—for example, between Tableau Desktop version There is one exception. Tableau sometimes introduces new connector support with a maintenance release. This can introduce compatibility issues between Tableau Desktop and Tableau Server if Tableau Desktop has been upgraded but Tableau Server hasn't been.
For details about data source support by release, see the Release Notes Link opens in a new window page. Tableau Desktop users can share workbooks—for example, by emailing them or copying them to a location on the company network.
But if two users are using different versions of Tableau Desktop, sharing isn't always possible. The rule is simple:. For example, suppose Amanda creates a Tableau workbook with version Zachary will be able to open that workbook, but he'll see this warning message:. The workbook will be upgraded when it is saved. The upgraded file can't be read by earlier versions of the application.
If Zachary edits and saves the workbook and sends it back to Amanda, he will need to downgrade the workbook first so that she can open it.
If not, the load will fail when Amanda tries to open it in Tableau Desktop version For more information about downgrading your workbook between Tableau Desktop versions, see Downgrade your workbook in this article. The same logic applies to Tableau extracts.
